Continuing our Teacher Asana series, Annie shares her love of Reclined Supta Baddha Konasana (with props!)

Blocks, bolster, eye pillow, blankets

Reclined Supta Baddha Konasana with blocks and a bolster is the dreamiest pose ever. When I need extra self love (this seems like every day lately) I spend at least 20 minutes here covered in eye pillows and blankets breathing into anahata – the heart chakra. It is actually Heaven on Earth! This pose encourages being in a shape with heightened awareness and cultivates inner listening. A restorative posture such as this one brings us closer to our affirmations and our stillness. In this posture you will get grounded, sloth off any stagnant energy around your heart, come back to you, and give yourself the fuel you need.

Nina Simone once sang, “You’ve got to learn to leave the table when love is no longer being served.” If you are depriving yourself of love, leave behind your busy life for a moment, get down on your mat and find this reclined bound ankle pose.

Light a candle, make a sup of herbal tea, fold a cozy blanket under the tailbone and place a bolster propped up on two foam blocks. Lay your spine slowly and gently on the bolster. Make any adjustments with your skull bones – higher or lower. Whatever feels good. You might like an extra blanket or scarf under the brain stem. The softness this creates in my neck and the tip of my spine is like butter. My scalp, skin, tendons, blood, hair, bones, saliva, blood all slow down. I can feel a magnetic sensation in the body like my cells bouncing off each other. Give your body a little massage – rig cage, back of neck, hips, thighs, heart and then settle the hands on the mat.
Allow shoulder blades to drip off the bolster and yield to the ground. Relax your neck on the bolster and tongue, jaw and teeth release. There is no clenching here. The body is truly able to feel the breath and the rhythm of life. The prana flows in and out like velvet and we start to find the place of stillness that we so long for.
As you lie on your props, simply lengthen the exhale without force, just by invitation. Notice the ebb, flow, rhythm, and texture of your breath. Continue to allow the prana to flow through your spine. Feel the dance of your breath from your scalp to your tailbone. The dance of breath continuing. The prana ever alive. Simply let go of whatever thoughts come in and no longer serve. The mind is hard to control, but use the breath and ancestral advice and you’ll get there. We are reminded of the ancient verse in the Bhagavad Gita:

Chapter 6, Verse 34 “Oh Krishna, the mind is restless, turbulent, strong and unyielding as difficult to subdue as the wind.”

Allow the soles of your feet to touch and the outer edges of your feet to rest on the mat. The thighs rotate out, but be generous with blocks, bolsters and blankets under the thighs so you are literally propped up and not hyper extending in the hips flexors. Make sure each support, whether a block or blanket, is the same height. Continue sinking the groins into the pelvis. In this asana, I love the release in the pelvis and the abductor muscles of the groin, but for me the real joy is in the letting go. You may want to assist the sinking action by laying a 5 pound sandbag across each inner groin, right where the thigh joins the pelvis (the bags will form a “V” with its apex at your pubis). But don’t use the bags unless your thighs are supported.

As you exhale soften the elbows and melt the shoulders away from your ears. Breathe deliciously in this pose for 10 to 20 minutes or longer.

Open all the doorways of the heart. Pull in brand new fresh affirmative energy directly into your heart. Whatever it is that our heart needs from us today. We know this practice – this yoga – opens us up –  listen – notice and transform.

To exit the pose inhale and draw the knees toward the midline. Exhale and relax your knees to the mat. Lie on your side on the floor in fetal position enjoying the symphony of sensations in the body.

Stillness is a process, not an endpoint. In fact, the research of Dr. Ellen Langer suggests that it’s not those moments of stillness that bring us the benefits of mindfulness, but rather the process of continually coming back to where we are.

This pose can actually deepen our relationship with ourselves and those around us. My favourite part is definitely how being present with myself and cultivating relaxation in my body can make me more present for others, more attuned to their needs, and aware of how I choose to communicate.

Notice all the magical synchronicities on your journey and remember you’re always supported.

Awake, my dear.

Be kind to your sleeping heart.

Take it out into the vast fields of Light

And let it breathe.

Say,

“Love,

Give me back my wings,

Lift me,

Lift me nearer.” – Hafiz

Rest and self care is the best way to protect yourself from colds and bugs. Whether it’s going to bed an hour earlier or spending 10 minutes Reclined Supta Baddha Konasana, do something for you.
