We have increased capacity in the big studio room to 30 mats. This is five extra from where we have been but still 10 under our pre-covid capacity. We have new floor stickers to show where to place your mats and there is still plenty of room to stretch out.

|
|
We have introduced Adjustment Cards to the studios. As teachers now offer more and more hands on adjustments, you can easily opt out by placing one of these cards on your mat. Adjustments are a personal preference and we hope the cards make you feel more comfortable in class.

ALICE SHARES HER STORY
YOGA & ARTHRITIS
|
|
I started practicing yoga in my local gym in 2011 after a friend suggested that it might be a good way of managing my back pain. I am so grateful for that friend and for her suggestion as she wasn’t wrong!
I started experiencing pain in my lower back and pelvis in my early 20’s. I found out 12 years later that I have a form of arthritis that affects the spine called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS for short). It’s a form of arthritis that affects young adults. Unfortunately the average diagnosis time is 8.5 years so many people will live with symptoms for a long time without receiving help or treatment.
My experience of practicing yoga in my local gym soon led me to my local yoga studio. I went from practicing once a week to as many times as I could. I was hooked! I was also astounded because I was no longer in pain with my back! I was convinced that yoga had cured me of my back pain. This profound experience is what prompted me to study yoga and become a teacher.
Of course there is no cure for arthritis. So whilst I am sure yoga played a huge role in managing my symptoms at that point in my life, the pain in my back did return. Arthritis tends to be cyclical. One can experience periods of remission (which can last for months and years) where the disease is fairly or completely inactive. Followed by periods of activity, often referred to as a flare.

Living with a chronic health condition and persistent pain can be challenging and can have implications not only on one’s physical health but also mental. I am so grateful for the practice of yoga which has been instrumental in my healing journey and my management of arthritis. I feel extremely blessed that I am able to manage my arthritis largely through lifestyle choices which involve daily exercise, strength training, managing stress levels, nutrition and getting good quality rest.
These are my favourite yoga practices and how they’ve helped me:
- Asana – whether it’s yin or vinyasa I am always able to find something within the yoga repertoire that my body responds well to. Over the years I have learnt to adapt my practice and incorporate more strength work to support my joints.
- Coherent breathing / Sama Vritti Pranayama – this breath practice involves breathing in for the same amount of time as you breathe out. I love its simplicity and its known benefits for balancing the nervous system, which can help to reduce pain and anxiety.
- Yoga Nidra – I practice this form of meditation most often as it helps me to rest and restore and manage my stress levels.
- Mindfulness meditation – learning to sit with one’s self can be such a healing practice. I like to follow seated meditation with journaling, where I write about how I am feeling on that day and what might have come up for me during the meditation.
If you’re concerned that you or anyone you know might be suffering from AS then here is a very helpful website with lots of resources: https://nass.co.uk/about-as/

ALICE IS BACK IN TOWN WITH A NEW SUMMER WORKSHOP
STRENGTH FOR YOGIS
|
|
In this two hour workshop Alice will share with you some ideas on how you can feel stronger and more capable in your asana practice by increasing your tolerance to load. You will explore how body weight exercises, such as those found in yoga, can be adapted in order to bias certain areas of the body. Through this exploration of classic yoga postures we will also debunk the idea that there is one perfect alignment for a pose.
