Yin Yoga is a slow paced style of yoga, with postures being held for longer periods of time. It helps to improve flexibility. Yin stretches and targets connective tissues between the muscles and fascia in the whole body. It helps to increase circulation in the joints and is a wonderful way to practise stillness of the mind. Yin also helps to regulate the flow of energy/chi in our body. It's a wonderful and nourishing practice.

This class is perfect for those seeking more balance in life and their yoga practice.

Class will begin with gentle, functional movement and energy cultivation practices (Qigong) to awaken and loosen the areas of the body that the practice will focus on. This will build seemlessly into a fluid, intuitive, breath led flow to get the heart beating more vibrantly and the lungs breathing more freely. In the second half of the practice we will slow down and sink deep into the subtle body with Yin postures. Intuitive use of props will be encouraged to help steady the body in deeper, longer holds where the only intention is to sink deeper when the body feels ready. This approach is said to release the fascia around the muscles and joints and promote more balance and efficiency along the meridian pathways (the same energy pathways treated in acupuncture, acupressure and reflexology).

The Ashtanga Yoga System was first recorded in the ancient manuscript, the Yoga Korunta, by the sage Vamana Rishi. In the early 1900s its text was passed to Tirumalai Krishnamacharya by his Guru, Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and in turn from Krishnamacharya to his students, among
whom were K Pattabhi Jois and BKS Iyengar. Since 1948 the Ashtanga Vinyasa system has been taught at many Shalas in India, most famously the Yoga Shala formed by K Pattabhi Jois. It involves synchronising breath with a progressive series of posture ~ a process producing intense internal heat purifying and detoxifying muscles and organs. The result is improved circulation, a light and strong body, and a calm mind. You will be lead by our senior Ashtanga teacher through the same sequence of postures that start with sun salutations before moving on to standing postures, seated postures, the finishing sequence and finally relaxation. Open to all levels.
